Youve
probably noticed that children have a lot more homework today than you did. And
it seems a lot harder! According to a University of Michigan study, the amount
of time children ages three to 11 spent studying at home each week increased about
50 percent from 1981 to 1997—from one hour, 25 minutes to two hours, seven minutes.
For kids ages nine to 11, it was 3.5 hours per week—almost an hour more than
in 1981. Many parents are not able to help their children with this much homework
because of time issues or after-school obligationsor because the parents
themselves have difficulties with math, writing, or science. These feelings of
helplessness or inadequacy can lead to stress on both the child and the parent
. . . which doesnt do either one any good.
Because
we saw the increased stress placed on our families, and witnessed firsthand what
that stress can do to your relationship with your child, we knew that something
had to be done. Thats why Fusion Learning Center opened the Homework Cafésm.
Complete with snacks, the Homework Café is a relaxed, fully
staffed learning environment where children of all ages can come for an hour—or
as long as they need—for guidance, supervision, and help with their homework.
At
the Homework Café, your child never needs a reservation or
appointment. Its open Sunday through Thursday. The Homework Café
is low cost too, and is open not only to our registered students, but also to
all students in the community. Homework
