| FREE Homework Help at Fusion |
Yes, you read that right! Fusion is offering free homework help to San Diego County students, grades K-12. We realize that the economic downturn has had a broad effect on everyone, and therefore, we want to continue to engage the community with our Free Homework Help program.
Free Homework Help is available for new Fusion students in the Homework Cafe from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The program will be ongoing through the end of the school year.
| Parent Education Night: College Planning |
Please join Karina Neal, Director of Tutoring & Mentoring, and Cody Pileski, Director of College Counseling, on May 12th at 5:30 p.m. for a seminar on college planning.
Topics include standardized testing; preparing your student for college; post-graduation options; narrowing down college choices; the college application process; specific information about timelines; planning for college for your 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th grader; and more. Contact Karina or Cody for more information at 858 792 2300.
| Test Prep Words of Wisdom |
Work on these five SAT words with your child for better test scores:
Abstruse (ab-STROOS): hard to understand or comprehend; obscure
Dilatory (DIL-uh-tor-ee): tending to delay or procrastinate
Ineffable (in-EFF-uh-buhl): too great to be described in words
Petulant (PET-choo-lunt): showing unreasonable impatience, especially over a small annoyance
Venal (VEE-nuhl): open to bribery
Fusion proudly offers 58 UC a-g approved classes in our unique one-on-one learning environment, and 14 of those classes are approved for Honors credit (5.0 scale).
Check out our complete list of UC-approved classes, and also see our elective classes that count toward graduation requirements and credits.
To learn more about our classes for credit, contact Chris Burger. If you'd like more information on our full-time, one-on-one school program, Fusion Academy, please contact Joseph Malki.
If your student is finishing a class through BYU Independent Studies, he or she will need to take the final exam with a BYU-certified proctor.
That's where Fusion comes in! We are certified proctors for BYU, and provide proctoring services at a nominal cost. Students do not need to be clients of Fusion to use our test-proctoring services.
Check out our online instructions for ordering the test through BYU. Contact Karina Neal with any questions you may have at 858 792 2300.
We sadly say farewell to two of our teachers, both of whom will be missed:
Brian Peterson, science teacher, has decided to strike out on an adventure and travel from Mexico to Canada . . . on foot. Yes, Brian is hiking his way up the coast, a journey anticipated to take five months. We're proud of and excited for you, Brian, and keep sending us photos!
Stephen Walsh, science and language teacher, is becoming an entrepreneur and opening his own computer business. Computers are his passion, and we wish him all the best!
Fusion's teachers are stars, and as you know, when we hire a new teacher, we always manage to find the best and brightest in the academic world. Meet two of our new star teachers:
Randy Aspuria joined Fusion's English department at the end of February, and he's already making an impact on our students. As a Navy brat, Randy lived all over the US and the world as a kid, from Rhode Island to the Philippines, with his family finally settling permanently in San Diego. Always a keen reader, he looked up to his high school English teachers as not just educators, but also mentors. This greatly affected his choice of career path, and led him to obtain his BA in Literature and Writing Studies from California State University, San Marcos. Welcome aboard, Randy!
Mark Miller arrived at Fusion most recently from Utah, and is a part of the Science and Math departments. He holds a BS in Atmospheric Science (Applied Physics) from the University of California at Davis, and studied Geosciences at Princeton University, with particular interest in paleoclimatology and biogeochemistry. Mark has tutored and taught students from high school to college level, is fluent in German (and conversant in Italian and Bulgarian!), and has lived all over Europe and the US. Glad to have you with us, Mark! |

| Fusion Test Scores Rock on a National Level |
Fusion students rocked their CAT-6 standardized test scores! This is proof that one-on-one learning is THE educational model for alternative learners, and Fusion celebrates our students' achievements. Keep up the great work, kids!
We are already enrolling students for fall 2009! For returning full-time students, please remember that your enrollment deposit is due no later than May 1st.
For prospective students and families, please contact Joseph Malki, Director of Fusion Academy, for a tour of the school at 858 792 2300.
| Another Year . . . Another Amazing Bunch of Graduates! |
Graduation ceremonies for the Fusion Academy Class of 2009 will be held on June 5th. We offer our hearty congratulations to the following graduating students:
Annabel Abbott • Lonnie Bacon • Melissa Berkay • Adam Blatt
Christina Chartz • Jack Francis • Jimmy Janes • Lexi Lakin • Ryan Martin
Shellby Noyes • Isabel Taylor • Megan Thomas • Ashley Tucker
Our best wishes to each of you, and know that we are so proud of you and your outstanding achievements. For information on this year's graduation, please contact Katrina Glynn.
| Visionary Photographer Inspires Fusion Students |
Aaron Chang was kind enough to visit with our students on March 21st to talk about his life and his accomplishments, and how high school ended up being important to his work as a professional photographer and avid surfer.
Aaron confessed that, as a teenager, he couldn't see the importance of a high school education. However, he noted how critical and necessary his education became after entering the professional world. He stressed the importance of hard work and perseverance, and encouraged our students to find their life dreams and put their energies into achieving them.
An Imperial Beach local, Aaron Chang began his photo career taking pictures for a friend. After graduating high school (yep, he did finish high school!), he moved to Hawaii to kick off his professional photography career. He's spent many years traveling the world and capturing it all through the lens of his camera. He's recently opened a gallery of his work in Solana Beach.
Thank you, Aaron, for taking the time to visit our school—you're an excellent example of what can be achieved if you work hard enough at it. Thanks also to Joni Miller, our art teacher, for arranging this inspiring student meeting.
| Collaborative Art Projects Underway |
Fusion's art department, led by Joni Miller, is leaping into three new group projects. Students and staff will combine their artistic skills to create a mural, a Fusion cookbook (send us those favorite family recipes!), and math teacher Dusti Ellingford's office walls. Design meetings are held weekly—contact Joni for details.
| Student Britt Galland Is Totally Tubular! |
Britt Galland, our semi-pro surfer student, has really made Fusion proud. At a recent surfing competition held by the National Scholastic Surfing Association, Britt represented Fusion and placed third! And it wasn't easy—while his competitors were surfing in groups of seven, Britt was all alone, representing us.
Britt, we're so proud of you, and the trophy you won is way cool!
| Heroes, Heroes Everywhere! |
One of our new endeavors at Fusion is the "Teachers and Students Are Heroes" program, which recognizes both students and teachers who've done something exceptional, either at Fusion or in our community. "Heroes" are nominated by both teachers and students, and rewards are given out monthly to nominees.
Local merchants have stepped up to support this program, and we send a special thanks out to California Pizza Kitchen, Rubio's Mexican Grill, Rudy's Taco Shop, Solana Beach Coffee Company, and Sam's Place for graciously donating the rewards.
| Don't Let Finals Finish You Off |
It's not too late to schedule tutoring time for your student for final exam prep. In fact, the sooner your student begins getting assistance at Fusion, the better his or her chances for a better grade on the final.
Hurry to sign up, though—times (especially after-school and evening times) are filling up quickly! Contact Karina Neal to set up your child's appointments today.
Maddison ("Maddy") Frapwell is this issue's Student of the Month!
Maddy is a new student here at Fusion, and one of the youngest at just eleven years old. She's been doing excellent work both inside and outside the classroom since her arrival in late February.
Always friendly, helpful, and polite, Maddy has brightened everyone's day since she first walked into Fusion. She works hard on her assignments, possesses an amazing artistic talent, and loves helping the staff with even the smallest task.
Maddy also cares about the world outside of Fusion: Over spring break, she raised money for the Just Like My Child Foundation by selling Kool-Aid® with a friend. She raised about $30 to help women and children in Uganda!
Way to go, Maddy, and thank you for all your hard work! We're so glad to have you at Fusion!
The Teacher Corner is where our unique faculty can share the experiences an inspiration they draw from being a part of the Fusion family.
This issue, Nicholas Angelo, Music Department Director, reflects on the changes and growth he's experienced at Fusion over the past several years:
"I've been teaching at Fusion for seven years now, and I think back on how far we've come as a school . . . and as a family. That's one of the keys at Fusion: It's not a collection of rules, policies, and procedures, but rather a philosophy that we 'Fusion-ites'—teachers and students—really are a family.
"We all learn from each other every day, and that's part of what's created this personality Fusion has developed.
"As I reflect on my time at Fusion, and the students I've been—and am—privileged to work with, from Vishal, Brynna, Britt, and Lonnie to Charlie, Elizabeth, Chase, and Brittany to Sophia and Quinn (just to name a few!), I see the immense potential in each student, and how remarkable that potential is. I continue to be thrilled to help kids reach their highest aspirations and create the most precious work of art there is: themselves."
Nick, we couldn't have said it better if we'd tried. And o, we didn't select you to do this issue's Teacher Corner just because your office is in a corner. Although that was part of it. |

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind. "
Dr. Seuss |
|
Eighth-grade student Jac Holcroft talks about what change Fusion has made for him:
"I am really loving being at Fusion. It's very challenging academically, and much different than other schools.
"If you're having difficulties at your current school, then Fusion is a good school for you. I had troubles at my other school, and when I came to Fusion, they all went away.
"Even though Fusion is tough academically, the program here provides you with the help and support to get through your classes. Since I've been here, my grade has gone from a B to an A-minus.
"I'm really happy to be learning and getting good grades!"
Thanks, Jac! We're so pleased you love Fusion as much as we do, and that you're excelling here. |

Fusion Learning Center News
January/February 2009
| Fusion Partners with American Education Group |
As you know, Fusion has been serving the San Diego community for 20 years, during which time your children have experienced Fusion's dedication to educational excellence through our highly customized, individual programs. Seeing the difference we've been able to make in so many young lives, we believe it is now time to expand the Fusion model to help children all over the country.
At least a few times a week, Michelle Gilman is asked why there aren't more programs like ours in other communities. Now we can all answer with enthusiasm, "There're about to be!"
We are so excited to announce Fusion's partnership with American Education Group (AEG). With AEG's help, Fusion will begin the process of expanding our unique educational model throughout California and the nation.
AEG's CEO, Pete Ruppert, and his team and committed to creating and sustaining excellence in education and investing in the social/emotional education of our children. We have been very impressed with their passion for education and their dedication to personalized learning.
Fusion and AEG share a common vision, and we are honored to work alongside AEG's outstanding team. Through the last three years, AEG has been building an impressive national network of top private schools, and has recognized what we have known for years: Fusion Learning Center and Fusion Academy offer an innovative education with high expectations for educational success through individual attention to each and every child.
AEG's Mission Statement:
"American Education Group (AEG) believes the future of education will be all about customization, individualization, and specialization. We also believe that the traditional approach of expecting all students to fit into one standard school model is outdated. Instead, future schools should be designed to meet the specific needs of its students. AEG is committed to being a leader in addressing this trend and is building a national network of unique, specialized private schools to meet this growing demand."
That philosophy certainly dovetails well with Fusion's mission and thinking!
To learn more about AEG, visit their website, americanedgroup.com.
And not to worry: Our roles at Fusion will not change. Michelle Gilman is thrilled to continue her role as Head of School and President of Fusion. Joseph Malki will remain Director of Fusion Academy, Karina Neal with continue her responsibilities as Director of Tutoring & Mentoring, and Chris Burger will still serve as Director of Independent Studies.
In fact, there will be no change whatsoever in the administrative staff, the teaching staff, the curriculum, or our policies and procedures. The only thing that will change is that the legacy of Fusion Learning Center will be expanded to more children in other locations!
Thank you for putting your faith and confidence in Fusion's programs for over two decades, and rest assured we will continue to offer the excellent educational services you've come to expect from us.
When we hire new teachers, we always manage to find the best and brightest in the academic world. Meet the two newest members of our teaching staff:
Emilio Torres is our newest Math and English teacher. Emilio recently relocated to San Diego from New York City, where he spent two years as a commercial litigator with a large law firm, followed by two years as a consumer-rights advocate for NYC's most vulnerable citizens. It was through his public-interest work that he realized education is the most effective way to empower people for success, and he left law to pursue teaching full time. Emilio is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, where he studied Physics and Creative Writing, and Northwestern University School of Law.
Jon Villasenor is no stranger to alternative education: For four years, he worked as a tutor for the America Reads foundation, where he was shown the importance of quality education in an increasingly competitive world. Jon has more than 14 years of musical experience, and plays with his band in and around San Diego. Prior to joining Fusion, he also volunteered part-time at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas. He also plans to pursue his PhD in Physical Therapy in the near future.
| Mock SATs and ACTs Continue at Fusion |
Fusion continues to offer our Mock SAT and Mock ACT tests, which are great ways to gain familiarity with the actual tests, receive written feedback, and know if your child needs some additional assistance with preparation for the actual tests.
Fusion Mock SAT, Mock Subject Tests, and Mock ACT dates are February 28th, April 18th, and May 16th.
See your school SAT/ACT calendar to make sure you register for the SAT test in a timely manner. Questions regarding extended-time SATs can be directed to Karina Neal at Fusion.
And if you're taking the real SAT or ACT, be on the lookout for your "test tube"! Fusion celebrates our test-prep kids, and wishes them all good luck!
Dates for the real SAT and ACT tests are:
SAT: January 24th, March 14th, May 2nd, June 6th
ACT: February 7th, April 4th, June 13th
See your local school for more info.
BYU test proctoring is also continuing at Fusion. Check out our instructions online for ordering the test through BYU, and if you have any questions, call us at 858 792 2300.

Jill

experience, not just in substance abuse counseling, but also
in handling general mental health issues and family struggles.
Her clinical background includes work in middle and high
school settings, in- and outpatient facilities, and corporate
and private practice settings.
Jill is available during the school day
and after school to see families and/or individual students.
Please contact Jill for more information or to schedule an appointment.
Fusion is proud that we can offer 58 UC a-g approved classes in our unique one-on-one setting, and that 14 of those classes are approved for honors credit (5.0 scale).

Just as a reminder, Chem labs are back in full swing after taking a hiatus over the holidays.
Chem labs are on Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m. All standard-level Chemistry students are expected to take three labs total, and all honors-level Chemistry students are expected to take six labs total. Please confirm your lab(s) with your Chemistry teacher. |

Fusion Academy News
for January/February 2009
Fusion Academy is proud to welcome the Johnson O' Connor Research Foundation, who will participate in an exceptional Parent Education Night on February 24th at 6 p.m.
Roger Rindge, director of the research foundation, will present a talk entitled "Aptitudes for Teens" that is oriented toward educating parents in how best to identify their students' individual aptitudes and talents.
Topics will include helping your child select a college and major, career path, and knowing and utilizing natural strengths and abilities for life.
Please RSVP to Kim Vesco by February 17th so we can reserve your seat.
We just received the results of the PSAT test, which was administered October 15th for our 10th- and 11th-grade students, so stay tuned for your child's full report and scores in the mail shortly.
| Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) |
Does your student need accommodations for SAT and ACT testing? Contact Karina Neal for information regarding signing up for appropriate accommodations through the Collegeboard (SAT) or ACT. Karina is also available to assist with IEPs, SSTs, and ISPs.
| SAT Prep for Full-Time Students |
Joseph Malki is currently scheduling SAT/ACT Prep tutoring sessions for our full-time students who need a little extra assistance getting ready for these tests. If you would like your child to have some test prep, email or call Joseph as soon as possible. Since our full-time kids don't have school on Fridays, it's a great day to prepare for the SAT, ACT, and Subject Tests.
| Wednesday Student Meetings |
Every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., we hold a schoolwide student meeting, in which the students come together as a community to discuss current events, talk about school-related happenings, and engage in peer-to-peer counseling on issues that affect them.
As these meetings are held at lunchtime, please be sure to send your child with his or her lunch on Wednesdays, since students may not have the opportunity to leave campus for lunch on these days.
| Fundraising for Just Like My Child Foundation Continues |
Fusion students have been hard at work raising money to sponsor our boarding-school student in Uganda through the Just Like My Child Foundation. We have held bake sales and hot-lunch specials, and will continue to offer hot lunches at least one day per week. (The lunch menu is posted in the big Homework Café.)
We encourage your child to participate in this worthy cause by purchasing a hot lunch, and note that 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to our sponsorship fund.
Eat up, Fusion fundraisers!
IROCs are Individual Reassessment of Commitment meetings that help our teachers and parents get a better picture of where each student stands. IROCs are conducted four times per year, and our next IROC Week is slated for the week of January 19th.
Watch your mailbox for your child's progress report, grades, self-evaluation, and updated goals.
And, please don't hesitate to call us to discuss your child's IROC and goals, as well as talk to your student about his or her self-eval. This is a great time to casually bring up your child's progress and how he or she feels about personal experiences at school. However, please keep in mind that your child's self-eval is just that: his or her SELF-evaluation. Too much judgment on your part can throw off your student's unique and individual introspection.
Congratulations to Cody Pileski, English and History teacher, who received his Master's degree in Education and Informational Design this year! We are very proud of Cody's achievement and his commitment to pursuing his education. Way to go, Cody!
| Art Department Awash in Screened Tees |
Our Art department just received supplies for screenprinting, and over the next few weeks Art teacher Joni Miller will be making T-shirts with each of her students.
And, if your child is interested in doing only one project (such as a T-shirt), he or she can sign up for just a few classes instead of a whole semester.
Other projects our Art students have executed include clay sculpture, photo transfers, scratch boards, chimes, cake decorating, optical illusions, large-scale papîer-maché projects, musical instruments, sewing, and spray painting.
Future project ideas include mosaics, furniture decorating, murals, and jewelry making. If you or your student have any other ideas, please contact Joni and let her know!
Lonnie Bacon, Fusion student and our part-time office assistant, barely imagined finishing high school when he joined us two years ago. Now, we are thrilled to announce that Lonnie will not only graduate this spring, but he has also been accepted at both Humboldt State and Chico State!
Lonnie's goal is to obtain his degree and return to Fusion as a Music and English teacher, so he can share firsthand his experience with, and pride in, Fusion.
We are so proud of Lonnie and his hard-earned accomplishments!
Winter is definitely here, so order your Fusion sweatshirt today! The sweatshirts are front-zip hoodie style, and cost just $30, with all proceeds earmarked for supplies and equipment for individual departments. The design is very cool, and we have all sizes from S-XL available. See Kim Vesco at the front desk to snag yours!
| Thank You, Fusion Parents! |
Fusion's staff and students were lucky enough to depart for winter break with a wonderful holiday party provided by our loyal and generous Fusion parents. We were all treated to delicious food, smiling faces, and holiday cheer.
Thank you to all the families who contributed to make the party a smash, and special thanks to organizers Ellin Rosenthal, Cicely Reiss, and Natalie Holcroft for making it happen
Ideas for fun springtime field trips are brewing, so keep an eye out for field-trip permission slips heading your way soon!
Casey Sheya this issue's Student of
the Month!
Since joining Fusion as a full-time student at the beginning of this school year, Casey has excelled academically, socially, and emotionally. He's really stepped up as a leader during school meetings, and has set a positive example for the other students to follow.
We're proud of your accomplishments, Casey, and keep up the good work!
The Teacher
Corner is where our unique faculty can share the
experiences and inspiration they draw from being a part
of the Fusion family.
This issue, Katrina Glynn, Homework Café teacher, talks about one of the key things she's gained here at Fusion:
"At Fusion, one of the most important things I have learned is the possibilities a new day and a new year can bring us. Each day here is a new start, and both teachers and students can brush off what might have been a hard day and start anew.
"It's refreshing to see the smiling faces of teachers and students in the morning, walking into what will hopefully be a more successful day than the last.
"Fusion is a special place for allowing us all the opportunity each day to try our hardest and to forgive us for days that may not have been our best."
Katrina, you've hit the nail on the head. That's exactly what Fusion is about: new beginnings, each and every day, and learning from the past in order to make better choices in the future. Thank you for being such an important part of our Fusion family!

Student Aaron Lampley discusses why Fusion has been a positive place for him to go to school:
"I'm in 11th grade, and this is my second year at Fusion. I've been more successful in my studies and my personal life here than at any of the three other schools I attended.
"Fusion's intimate environment and one-on-one classes help me learn better, not fall behind in my classes, and make better choices in every part of my life."
Aaron, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. We're glad you're here, too, and we're proud of your academic and personal achievements! |

We would like to say hello to all our

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He also served on active
duty in the United States Army.
Blair
Lyman has a BA in International
Studies/Anthropology from UCSD. Prior to Fusion, she was
Facilitator at UC Recreation; Campaign Coordinator for Amnesty
International in Santiago, Chile; and interned at the Center
for Comparative Immigration Studies.
Beth
Nakae is from Northern California, and has both a
BS in Human Biology as well as a Master's in Biology to her
credit. Her professional background includes serving as a
Graduate Biology Teaching Assistant at UCSD, a researcher in
UCSD's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology departments, and a
Patient Assistance Volunteer at the UCSD Student-Run Free

West Coast.
Terry
Wasley is our other new Homework Café teacher,
and he holds a BS in Finance from the University of Maryland.
Currently, Terry is working on his Master's in Education and
his teaching credential at National University. Before joining
Fusion, Terry worked as a Substitute Teacher for the Carlsbad
Unified School District.
Wow! What a list! We are
truly lucky to be able to say these dedicated and talented
teachers are now part of the Fusion family!
Matt Russell has departed
Fusion for the next chapter in his life. He was accepted to
medical school on the East Coast, and is currently studying
diligently. He hopes to return to San Diego at some point in
the future. We miss you, Matt!
Jason Saltmarsh has also headed
east, returning to his hometown of Boston to be nearer his
family. Good luck, Jason!
Jeremiah Couch and Bailee Chandler have both returned to school
to finish their respective Master's degrees, and we wish them
both the best.
Fusion is always offering our Mock SAT and newly
developed Mock ACT tests. The mock tests are a great way to
gain familiarity with the actual tests, receive written
feedback, and know if you need some additional assistance with
preparation.
This year, in addition to the SAT and ACT,
Fusion is offering the Mock SAT Subject Tests. When enrolling,
please be sure you specify which subject test you are planning
to take. If you're taking a foreign language SAT subject test,
please bring your own headphones.
Fusion Mock SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and ACT
dates are September 22, October 20, November 17, January 12,
February 16, April 20, and May 31.
If you're taking the real SAT or ACT, be on the
lookout for your "test tube." Fusion celebrates our test-prep
kids! Good luck!
Is your student finishing a class through BYU
Independent Studies? If so, then he or she will need to take
their final exam with a certified proctor. BYU test proctoring
is available at Fusion, so why not have your child take the
exam in an environment in which he or she is comfortable?
Check out our instructions online for ordering the test
through BYU, and if you have questions, please call the Front
Desk.

| Substance Abuse & Recovery Division |
Fusion launched the
Adolescent Recovery Program over the summer, and it's already
been featured in newspaper articles in both the Del Mar
Times and Solana Beach Sun.
This outpatient
substance-abuse program is now available to all adolescents in
our entire community. The program is headed by Season
Hewitt, who has seven years' experience as a
counselor for Scripps McDonald Center/Adolescent Intensive
Outpatient program.
Thanks, Season, for helping us bring this
much-needed service to the San Diego community.
| Independent Study Classes for
Credit Still Enrolling |

Academy News
September/October 2007
Fusion
Academy students were a busy group this summer as they
took those months to get ahead or make up some courses.
Not only were they hard at work academically, they took
some time out to have a little fun, too.
Science students jumped on the opportunity
to visit the Bodies Exhibit at UTC, and what an amazing
field trip that was! Thank you, Brian
Peterson, for coordinating this fascinating
event!
Many
thanks go out to Judith Rothrock,
mother of student Curtis Scholz, for
giving Fusion Academy 20 tickets to the September 18th
Padres game. We all had a blast! Go Padres!
| Fusion Band Rockin' Harder Than Ever |
Fusion
Band is back in action, and what a group of musical
talent we have this year! There are currently seven
students in the band, and we're not stopping there. If
you want to be a part of Fusion Band, contact Nicholas
Angelo.
The
band rehearses on Sundays in Cardiff, and this year, as
in years past, they'll be performing gigs at various
locations in the community. Keep your ears open for more
info on where you can catch these budding stars playing
live.
| CATE Program Brings the World
to Fusion |
Michelle
Gilman and Mary
Easton are now leading the weekly Wednesday
Student Meetings, and they have decided that this year,
the overarching theme of these important schoolwide
meetings will be learning compassion and
tolerance. They will be using the Compassion
& Tolerance Education (CATE) program, as well as
guest speakers, educational DVDs, and other methods.
The
students will be learning about important global topics
such as hate crimes, prejudice, and ethnic cleansing,
among others. Philanthropy and volunteerism will also be
addressed.
The
program kicked off last week, and already the positive
response from the students is amazing.
These meetings are held each Wednesday at noon,
so please be sure to send your child to school with a
lunch, as they cannot leave the building to get lunch
elsewhere.
Laura Luxenburg, mother
of student Baron Luxenburg, will be
addressing the student body regarding her recent trip to
Uganda, Africa. She will show a PowerPoint presentation
of her personal experiences there, and will discuss ways
in which Fusion students can be a part of the solution
for the problems in that region. Thank you, Laura, for
being willing to educate our students on this important
world cause.
| Our Students Are Real
Sew-and-Sews! |
Fusion's Art students have undertaken a
new project: sewing pillows and pieced panels for a
blanket that they will donate to one of the causes of
their choice after Laura Luxenburg's presentation on
Uganda. Many thanks to Charlene
Hoekstra, grandmother of student Quinn
Hoekstra, for donating a sewing machine, and
thanks also to Mary
Easton, Art teacher, for spearheading this
worthy endeavor!
Have you seen our new
flat-screen TV/monitor in the Homework Café? This new
technological addition has been instrumental in allowing
the whole school to view presentations and videos. We
plan on putting it to good use a lot this year!
Fusion also purchased five new computers for
general use in the HC, and there's also a portable
laptop available for students to use. Further, we
procured a portable DVD player and a ton of new videos
to enhance the Language department and other
departments. Please see Nicholas
Angelo if you need assistance with any of
our AV equipment.
The Parent Advisory Group
will meet on October 22nd at 6 p.m. here at Fusion
(light refreshments will be served). This group is open
to all parents, and we strongly encourage you to be an
integral part of Fusion by participating in this
important group. This is a wonderful way to contribute
to the overall mission of Fusion Academy and to help
support our students.
| New Middle School
Developments |
In the next few weeks, we
will be requesting a meeting will middle school parents.
Fusion's administration has been hard at work
redesigning our middle school program, and we have some
new and exciting developments we want to share with you.
Please stay tuned for an email invitation from Sarah
Easton requesting your presence at this
important meeting.
| Show Your Fondness for Fusion |
The weather's getting right
for needing something a little warmer to wear, and what
better way to wrap up than in your own Fusion hoodie
sweatshirt? These long-sleeved, front-zip, black hooded
sweatshirts feature the Fusion logo and tagline. Sweatshirts are $30, and all
proceeds are earmarked for supplies and equipment for
individual departments.
Those of you who've ordered
your hoodies should already have received them; if you
haven't ordered yours yet, grab one soon! See Sarah
Easton at the Front Desk to get yours
today!
| More Cool Courses Coming Down the Pike |
The Marine Biology course is ready and
is currently being offered. A big thanks to Samantha
Serpa for designing this exciting
curriculum!
Kate
Brutlag and Marshall
Brown are in the process of creating a
Photography course, so if you're interested in that,
please contact Kate.
Greg
Pitman is currently designing a Journalism
course, which will dovetail with our first-ever yearbook
and literary magazine. Once he has the curriculum
perfected, Greg will be scouting out participants, so
get your pens fired up!
At last, French 3 is now being offered,
and the course is taught by Marshall
Brown. While the class is not yet UC
approved, all students are welcome to take the class for
graduation credit. Thanks for getting this ready,
Marshall!
Joseph
Malki and Kate
Brutlag will be offering our seniors
college guidance counseling this year. With a record
number of our kids graduating in 2008 and applying to
four-year colleges, this service will help make the
application process easier for all.
Joseph and Kate will be
sitting down with seniors one by one to discuss each
student's goals and help them navigate the college app
process. Congrats to our Class of 2008!
In case you haven't heard
(despite all our joyful shouting), Fusion is now fully
WASC accredited! Our formal certificate arrived over the
summer, and we want to thank all our parents, friends,
faculty, and colleagues who came out in support of our
school. We couldn't have done it without you!
Fusion now has an
extensive language library encompassing CDs and DVDs for
all foreign language courses offered, thanks to Kate
Brutlag, who researched this and procured
these much-needed supplements to our Foreign Language
department.
The PSAT is being offered
on October 17th for all 10th and 11th grade students. To
do your best, get a good night's sleep the night before
and eat a good breakfast the morning of the test. Those
two things will help you tackle the PSAT!
Due to our large
enrollment this year, IROC Week will now be stretched
out over a two-week span. IROCs begin the week of
October 5th.
Be on the lookout for your
child's progress report, grades, self-evaluation, and
updated goals. Also, we will be sending you a transcript
summary with this IROC report.
Please feel free to call
us to talk about your child's IROC and goals, and please
remember to speak to your student about his or her
self-evaluation. This is a great time to casually bring
up his or her progress and how he or she feels about
personal experiences at school. However, keep in mind
that your child's self-eval is his or her
SELF-evaluation; too much judgment on your part can
throw off his or her unique and individual
introspection.
We selected three
Students of the Month this time: Alexia
Beeler, Shaine Leaver, and Ryan Martin.
Alexia has done a great job in our highest academic classes.
Her dedication to her work is shown on a daily basis,
and her high expectations of herself are seen in her
applications to some of the best four-year universities.
Shaine's
been doing a phenomenal job since starting at Fusion,
and sets a very good example for his peers. His
determination and dedication in his academic studies are
plainly evident.
Ryan continues to impress his teachers again this year with
his immaculate schoolwork and professional demeanor. His
teachers note his ability to consistently go above and
beyond what's asked of him.
Congratulations to all
three of these outstanding examples of Fusion student
excellence! Great job, kids!
Samantha
Serpa wanted to share her thoughts on her
experiences so far as part of the Fusion family:
"I am one of the science teachers here
at Fusion, and I began teaching here in the summer of
2007. A native of the United Kingdom, I emigrated to
America a little over a year ago, and began a Master's
program at the University of San Diego.
Moving to America had been a passion of
mine from the time I finished my Bachelor's degree in
Marine Biology, which I attained from the University of
Wales-Swansea.
Following graduation, I worked in
Florida for a short time as a research assistant, where
I observed and trained manatees in one of the many state
parks. After my experience in Florida, I caught the
travel bug, and so I decided to join a charter boat and
worked as a crew member aboard an Edwardian motor yacht.
This was an awesome experience that enabled me to see a
variety of different places and cultures.
I eventually
settled back in the UK for three years, where I worked
in a college, teaching science to students age 14 and
over. Finally, I got my 'golden ticket,' so to speak,
when I was accepted into the Marine Science program at
USD. I am still pursuing my degree, but I am extremely
happy and excited to be working at Fusion, where I can
follow my other passion, which is teaching." |

FRIDAY FUN DAYS! |
If you have any ideas for Friday Fun
Days, please contact Nicholas
Angelo.
Based on the
success of last year's baseball game, we would
like to schedule another one this year.
Some of the kids
have also suggested visiting the Museum of
Tolerance in LA, a beach day, and a shopping day
(the girls thought of that one!).
Any interested
parents who would like to join us are welcome.
We'll give you plenty of time to plan for the
Friday Fun Days, as they're scattered throughout
the school year. Hope you can join us! |

Student Max Greenbaum writes about
his thoughts on the new school year, and on the
future:
"So, this is a new
school year, and while classtime seems to be going
by slowly right now, I know that soon enough it'll
be flying by.
I am watching the
Fusion family regroup after the summer, and have
been talking to some of the people who graduated
from Fusion in June. They're telling me all about
the changes in their lives, what they're going to
be doing, how excited they are about starting a
new phase in their lives.
Hearing them, I can't help but think
what's in store for me, but I'm sure of this: If
you want something badly enough, there's no
stopping you from achieving your
dreams." |

| VOL. 3 |
December 2006 / January 2007 |

Dear
Fusion families
Happy holidays to all our Fusion friends and families! December and January are great months for personal reflection, as we say goodbye to one year and greet the upcoming one. As we wrap up 2006, we have the unique opportunity to release all that we feel was less than optimal, and continue to hold dear the events of this past year that helped us grow. We can look ahead at a fresh new year with hope, motivation, and a renewed sense of purpose. We have the ability to plan anew, set things right, and venture out with new vigor and fresh eyes.
My holiday wish for you is that you can find a moment in hectic December to contemplate the possibilities of what 2007 has in store for you. Here at Fusion, we are always looking ahead with hope, with excitement, and with direct purpose. We strive to be relentless in our optimism, and to look for any reason to celebrate fresh starts, and a new year seems to be the perfect excuse. My hope is that all of our families, (our personal ones and our Fusion ones) join us in celebrating fresh starts, renewed vigor, and a continued sense of enthusiasm in the upcoming year.
My warm regards,

Michelle Rose Gilman

Fusion Learning Center News for December 2006 / January 2007...
Final Exams Are Right Around the Corner
Most public and private schools hold their final exams around the end of January. Don’t delay in getting the tutoring you need for your finals! Most teachers have openings to accommodate the high volume of tutoring appointments requested during this time. If you feel that extra tutorial sessions might be needed for finals, phone the front desk and schedule those appointments soon. Scheduling is completed on a first-come, first-served basis.
And don’t forget, certain teachers ARE available during the holiday break to help you get a jumpstart on those finals or to get ahead in a class. There is also weekend assistance available, so don’t wait. . . we’re ready for you!
Nicholas is Back in the Homework Café
Your favorite Homework Café teacher is back in the Homework Café (HC) after a two-year break! Nicholas is available for homework help Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. to help you. Not only will you get all your homework complete, you’ll have a darn good time doing it! No appointment is needed for the HC, so just swing on by, bring your books, maybe a snack or dinner, and get the assistance you need from Niko!
Extended Time for SATs
Karina Gillick wants to remind all students who are enrolling for the SATs in 2007 to have their disability documentation complete two months prior to the actual SAT date. If you are seeking accommodations on the SAT—like extended time or a reader—it is imperative to submit the paperwork in a timely fashion. If you wait too long, you won’t get your requests. For more info on the SATs or extended time, contact Karina at Fusion.
Music Lessons Available
Fusion’s Music department has some rare openings! Fusion offers lessons or classes for credit in most instruments including guitar, bass, drums, and recording arts. Call the front desk today to get more info.
New Tutors and Teachers
Fusion welcomes Erik Hinojosa to our growing family of teachers! Erik graduated in 2003 from UCSD with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Economics. He has a minor in Latin American Studies. Currently, he is available to teach and tutor all math levels, Spanish, and certain science courses. He is also fluent in American Sign Language, and is available to tutor and teach ASL. Erik’s dynamic personality is a welcome addition to the Fusion family!
Fusion Offers New Classes
Fusion is now offering Japanese as a class for credit. Feel free to call and get more information if you are interested in taking Japanese to meet your language requirement. Fusion teachers have also been very busy writing curriculums for new classes, so be on the lookout for American Sign Language (ASL), Astronomy, and Psychology to be offered very soon! |

Fusion
Academy is unlike any school in the county: We are specialists
in one-on-one education, and are dedicated to teaching the
unique student who requires more personalized and meaningful
instruction.
Fusion Academy students fill their school days
with an unheard-of level of engagement, from one-on-one instruction
in academic classes to enjoying our full-scale recording studio
to immersing themselves in our Expressive Arts program. Each
student's schedule is custom tailored to meet his or
her needs, and learning is conducted in a warm and unique, yet structured, environment.
Fusion Academy began
the 2006-2007 school year -- its fourth in operation -- with
recordbreaking enrollment of 38 students. We anticipate reaching
our maximum enrollment of 50 full-time students this year.
For more information on this amazing program for students
grades 6-12, or for a personal tour, call the school or just
swing on by!
Fusion Academy News for December 2006 / January 2007...
Parent Advisory Group Meeting
We encourage all parents of our full-time students to be an active part of the Parent Advisory Group Meeting on January 25, 2007, at 7 p.m. at Fusion. This meeting gives parents the opportunity to meet each other, discuss important “goings on” at Fusion, and have a voice in the development of our innovative school.
IROC Week
IROC week was held the week of December 11, 2006. All full-time parents should expect progress reports prior to the new year. Remember to talk to your kids about their goals: Their self-evaluations are an integral part of the IROC system.
The Christina Wolfe Recovery Fund Benefit
What a wonderful fundraiser! Thanks go out to the Fusion Band for performing and doing a bang-up job! (Shout out to Noah Gilman on drums, Aimee Jacobs on vocals, and Eric Roberts on sax!)
Thanks also to all the Fusion families and staff who came out to show their support of Christina Wolfe, who was critically injured in a near-fatal car accident back in September. The event raised over $11,000 toward her recovery expenses.
As for Christina herself, she is staying strong and making great strides in her recovery. She is moving both legs, and beginning to attempt to stand up with the aid of her physical therapists! They expect that our girl will be walking with braces sometime next year. Her spirits are incredibly upbeat, and her stamina is to be admired. Way to go, Christina, and way to go, Fusion, for supporting her through your continued outpouring of love and dedication!
Ornament Program a Great Success!
Thanks to full-time parents Joanne Wornham and Julia Durkin for creating the Ornament Program for Christina! Fusion collected a boxful of ornaments that were delivered to her family last weekend. The Wolfe family is incredibly grateful for all your support and love!
Art Department Gearing Up for Showcase
Fusion’s Art department is getting ready to showcase the wonderful student art being created within our school. Stay tuned for a great art event featuring the Fusion Band and our wonderful Art students who have been hard at work creating masterpieces.
Inaugural Art Department Sandwich Sale a Delicious Success!
The Art department made and sold grilled cheese sandwiches to raise money toward their goal of purchasing an airbrush gun in December. Keep those yummy sandwiches coming!
Online Fusion Calendar to Debut Shortly
Be on the lookout for the Fusion calendar as a permanent icon on the website. The calendar will help all of us keep track of the goings-on at Fusion.
Fusion Volunteers Out and About
On November 12, Fusion students and teachers visited Jewish Family Services. When they arrived, they each received handfuls of bags and were instructed to bag the piles of donated food from grocery stores. They filled each bag with fruit, vegetables, gravy, and desserts. When they were all finished, there must have been a good 200 bags of food! It made them feel good to know that the food was going to families who couldn’t afford to have a nice Thanksgiving meal. What a great gift, Fusion students—good job!—and thanks to staff members Janelle Pieros and Shannon Harrington for orchestrating this community-service event!
End-of-Day Reminder for Full-Time Parents
Please remember to be timely in picking up your students from the Homework Café when they are done for the day. We understand that our students love to be at Fusion, but far too many of them “just hanging out” after their work is complete. This creates a liability for both your child and Fusion, and creates unnecessary distraction to the other students attempting to get their work done. Prompt pick-up is required and, effective January 1, students will begin to incur after-school HC charges if not picked up within 30 minutes after their work is complete for the day. If your child drives, please be sure to instruct them that they are to leave campus once they have completed their schoolday. Thank you for your cooperation!
Student of the Month
This issue’s student of the month is Melissa Rubio. Previously, Melissa attended middle school in Tijuana, Mexico, and is now a freshman at Fusion. Melissa has excelled academically and has added to the diversity of Fusion’s varied population. Melissa says that she loves the personal touch of Fusion and the easy access that she has to her teachers. We are happy to have you with us, Melissa, and keep up the good work! |

“Some friends of mine from Fusion got to help out with making Thanksgiving baskets for less fortunate families. It was the day of my birthday, yet I was more then happy to be a part of it. We all met up at a café first, and my teacher got me a coffeecake and a candle. I thought it was very nice. We were all happy and ready to get over and help out. When we got there, there were lots of people already making the food arrangements. We made a little system and hopped in the group. It was fun. We filled up tons of bags with lots of food. It was a great experience, and when we were done we all went to the pancake house. It was a good day.”
Hey, thanks, Alice, for being a part of that great event! |

Fusion Learning Center News
February & March 2007
Fusion is always offering our Mock SAT tests. The Mock SAT is a great way to gain familiarity with the actual test, receive written feedback, and know if some additional assistance is needed with preparation.
| NEW Substance Abuse Division Launch |
Fusion has plans to launch a revolving eight-week outpatient substance-abuse program. This program will be available to the entire community, headed by Season Hewitt, Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor. We anticipate acquiring additional space to house this beneficial new program. Stay tuned for more details!
Shannon Harrington made a major decision in January to move to Turkey to start a new chapter in her life. We are happy to report she arrived safely, and is enjoying her new surroundings. Although we miss her greatly, we're pleased that she followed her dream. She plans on returning for a visit sometime this spring. Good luck, Shannon!
Veronica Baez has also decided to leave us to return to school and obtain an advanced degree in Math. We wish her the best of luck as she pursues this endeavor. We'll miss you, Vero!
| New Teachers, Tutors, and Staff |
Fusion welcomes three incredible new staffmembers this month, and we are incredibly grateful for the talent within our circle. We continue to attract the most creative, passionate, and educated teachers in our industry! Take a look:
Jeremiah Couch arrives with a single-subject teaching credential in Social Studies and a Masters in Education from National University. He also holds both AA and BA degrees in History; taught in a Department of Defense high school in Wurzburg, Germany; and has supervised a "6-to-6" program in the Spring Valley School District.
Shannon Devine joins us with a BA in Political Science and Spanish, and a minor in History, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She also has previous tutoring experience, and has served as a soccer and baseball coach.
Season Hewitt has seven years' experience as an Adoelescent Intensive Outpatient Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (certified through the Board of Alcohol & Drug Counseling) at the Scripps McDonald Center. Additionally, Season holds certifications in Anger Management and Adolescent Anger Management. She graduated with honors from San Diego City College's Alcohol & Other Drug Studies program. And, she's bilingual in English/Spanish.

Fusion Academy News for February/March 2007
The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is once again visiting our school. The committee arrives on March 25th, and they have requested a meeting with our parent body on that date at 3 p.m. We ask that all of our parents come to that meeting to greet the committee and to assist us in obtaining our accreditation.
Parents, we cannot do this without you! Please put the date and time into your calendars—it's only one hours, and your words to WASC will last a lifetime. We humbly request that you support Fusion Academy as we attempt to become a part of the esteemed group of schools accredited by this powerful organization.
| Annual Showcase of the Arts |
A creative explosion is happening on Saturday, April 21st 2007, at 5 p.m.: Fusion Academy's first Annual Showcase of the Arts! Entitled "Put Your Lights On," the showcase will encompass student art pieces, music by Fusion's Music department (including musical works by our students), and a poetry/rap slam (guided by Bailee Chandler, English teacher extraordinaire). The highlight of the evening will be the Text Art exhibit, with contributions from both students and faculty, prompted by the question "What would you like to say to the Universe?"
Particular pieces of note: Jack Schreiber's intricately detailed sculpture of a woodland house . . . Dan Martinez' pen-and-ink entitled "Coltrane" . . . Graham Bishop's lighted sculpture of glass, feathers, metal, and clay, called "Random" . . . Melissa Rubio's amazing work-in-progress . . .
Please plan to attend—you may even see a side of your child you never knew existed!
A special thank you goes to Eric Roberts from Mary Easton, Art Program Director, for the space and furnishings template for the Art room. What an incredible help!
We'll send out reminders for this special event soon, so be on the lookout for them.
Special Request: The Art department is humbly requesting an airbrush gun and a digital camera for student use. Donations toward their purchase (or of the actual items!) would be much appreciated. Please contact Mary Easton, Art Program Director, for more information, and THANK YOU in advance!
| Friday Fun Days & Other Field Trips |
Fusion's first Friday Fun Day is here! Nicholas Angelo is organizing this new program, and kicking it off on March 2nd with a trip to Sea World. The cost is just $28 (we got a great school discount!), and all interested students should see Nicholas for a permission slip.
Upcoming Friday Fun Days include trips to the K-1 Speedway and the Wild Animal Park. We're also taking suggestions for subsequent Fun Days. Please contact Nicholas with your suggestions and/or comments.
Janelle Pieros, Language Department head, and Veronica Saydak, English Department head, are planning a field trip to Chicano Park in San Diego. For English classes, the trip corresponds to the study of Mexican-American literature, and for Spanish classes, it satisfies the cultural experience requirement. Please contact Janelle or Veronica for details.
Brian Peterson, Science Department head, along with Janelle, is planning a field trip to the Museum of Man in Balboa Park for science students. For more info, please get in touch with Brian or Janelle.
IROC Week, February 19th-23rd! |
IROC Week is in full swing! Be on the lookout for your child's progress report, grades, self-evaluation, and updated goals. Also, we'll be sending a transcript summary with this IROC report. Please feel free to call Michelle Gilman or Joseph Malki if you'd like to discuss your child's IROC and goals.
And, please talk to your child about his or her self-evaluation. This really is an excellent time to casually bring up progress and how he or she feels about personal experiences at school. Keep in mind, though, that students' self-evaluations are just that: SELF-evaluations. Try not to be judgmental, as that can skew your child's unique and individual introspection.
| Out-of-This-World Course Offerings |
Astronomy: If you've ever wondered why Saturn has rings, what a galaxy looks like through a telescope, or what the heck "dark matter" is, then our new Astronomy course is for you! We're now offering semester and full-year courses in the subject. The course involves daytime and nighttime labs utilizing our new six-inch Newtonian reflector telescope and solar-filtered binoculars. It also has an astrophotography component. Way to go, Kate Brutlag, for writing an incredible curriculum for this new course! For more information, contact Kate or an administrator.
Japanese: Fusion has begun offering Japanese classes. The courses focus on not only the language, but also the culture, of the Land of the Rising Sun, including the study of Japanese festivals such as Setsubun and Tanabata, extensive study in all three Japanese alphabets, and weekly dialogues designed to give students a command of everyday Japanese. Again, contact Kate Brutlag for more info.
Woodshop: We're now offering Woodshop as an elective class. Woodshop is held off campus on Fridays, by scheduled appointment only. The class typically runs in three- to four-hour blocks. And, if anyone has a lathe they would like to donate, please let Nicholas Angelo know!
Psychology: Another new course we're very proud to add to our list of classes for credit is Psychology. Many thanks to Greg Pitman and Lindsey Free for writing this curriculum.
If your child is interested in enrolling in any of these stellar new classes, please contact the school administration.
Community Service: All Fusion Academy students looking for community service hours (that's all of you kids in Health and Life Skills classes!) should contact Kate Brutlag regarding a Friday trip to serve food to the homeless at Father Joe's Villages. You can visit their website for more information at fatherjoesvillages.org.
| New Student UN is Forming Now |
The new Fusion Academy United Nations group is forming to give students the opportunity to learn about international issues, building unity, and using their voices to help aid those in need.
Our UN group will allow our students to connect with other students around the world, and will help them gain valuable experience in leadership and service positions.
The student-run group will meet once a month to participate in several programs established by the national network of UN student alliances. One of the programs includes a "Model UN" conference, where different UN groups travel to a site to hold a mock conference and represent the interests of a particular country. Other programs such as HERO and Adopt-a-Minefield give students the chance to help raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS in impoverished areas and the dangers of landmines that remain after civil wars.
For more information, contact Jason Saltmarsh, who is leading the charge for the Fusion UN.
| Wednesday Hot Lunch Change |
Wednesdays' hot lunch has been switched from Round Table Pizza to Solana Beach Coffee Company. Students can now get grilled cheese sandwiches, a side snack, and a drink for $5. Please remember to send lunch money with your child on Wednesdays, as the schoolwide student meeting is held during their lunchtime, and students are unable to leave campus to get lunch.
| Update on Christina Wolfe |
Christina has made tremendous progress, and we are so very proud of her! She is currently at Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center in Downey, California, continuing her recovering from a devastating car crash in September 2006.
She is walking with the aid of a walker and leg braces, and is working diligently to regain the strength in her arms and legs. She plans to relocate back to San Diego upon discharge from the rehab center in mid-March, and to live independently. What a remarkable feat!
Please continue to send your cards and letters to her directly or through Fusion—she really loves hearing from everyone!
Alex Schleyhahn is the student of the month for this issue of the Fusion News! Alex's enthusiastic attitude and warm personality have positively influenced both students and staff. Alex's teachers report that he is very committed to his schoolwork, and puts in tremendous effort. His caring personality has added to Fusion's compassionate and tolerant environment.
Alex, thank you for all you bring to Fusion, and keep up the great work! |

A note from Tom McKee, Fusion Academy Class of 2008
Fusion has helped me out in a lot of different ways. Not only do I understand the material that my teachers give me, but I have learned how to treat kids around me with respect. That might sound cheesy, but it is true. I no longer judge people by the way they act or dress. I have also found that Fusion has helped me in my sobriety. The temptations are thankfully fewer than I thought that they would be because I get support from my peers around me, many of whom have been through the same life struggles as I have. All in all, Fusion is a great school, and I don't know what I would do without it.
Thanks, Tom! Keep on keepin' on—you rock! |

May 2007 |

Dear
Fusion families,
Welcome to the May/June 2007 edition of the Fusion News!
Would you believe the busy 2006-07 school year is coming to a close? It's been a year of great success for many of our students, and we are so proud of their accomplishments. Thank you all for your continued support of our programs, and your consistent belief in our mission.
This issue of the newsletter is just chock-full of information on what we've been doing, what we've got in the works, and all sorts of other pertinent things you need to know.
Fusion Academy is graduating a record number of seniors this year! Fourteen students will receive their diplomas at graduation, and I feel truly honored to preside over such a wonderful event. Some of these students never dreamed of finishing high school, and some never thought college was an option. I can't tell you how proud I am of all of them! They are proof that we are all on the right path, and that Fusion is leading the way in innovative education.
As I reflect on this past year, I am also proud of the efforts of our staff and our parents. Thank you all for making this school year our biggest success yet!
And, as we prepare for what's shaping up to be an incredibly busy summer, we look back in gratitude to all of life's occurrences--the great times, the sad times, and all the small but special moments in between. Without all of it, life would be meaningless.
My very warm regards,

Michelle Rose Gilman

Fusion Learning Center News
May/June 2007
We are in full swing with our summer program enrollment. Summer is an excellent time to strengthen weak skills (like math or reading), sharpen up writing skills, or simply take a look at next school year's books in order to get ahead and get ready for the fall.
Some of our most popular programs include Novel Pre-Reading, Study & Organizational Survival Skills, and our trademark Hamburger Writing program (learn how to write the standard five-paragraph essay).
Our summer schedule is filling up fast, so don't delay if you'd like to enroll in one of our programs! We expect to reach maximum capacity by June 18th, so call the front desk today for more info and to make a summer scheduling appointment!
| Summer Classes for Credit |
Once again, Fusion is offering our one-on-one teaching environment for all classes for credit. All courses are University of California (UC) approved and WASC accredited through the Grauer School.
Chemistry, Physics, and higher-level maths seem to fill up the fastest, so call now to make your appointment to schedule for these classes for summer!
| SAT, Mock SAT, and ACT Tests |
We are holding a Mock ACT on Saturday, May 26th, from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost is just $65, and included not only the test, but an evaluation of your completed test with feedback and recommendations. See your teacher to sign up now!
Summer Mock SATs will also be held on Saturday, July 28th, and Saturday, August 18th. Again, please see your teacher for more information or to sign up.
As you all make your summer plans, be sure to include attending the Astronomy & Art Workshop from August 6th-9th, headed by Mary Piazza Easton, Art Program Director, and Kate Brutlag, Astonomy teacher.
During this four-day workshop, students will learn about the architecture of the solar system and the fundamentals of astrophotography, as well as how to spot planets, find constellations, and use a telescope. In addition to the scientific concepts they learn, students will create group and individual artwork reflecting their newfound knowledge. Highlights include designing a piece of constellation lore, taking photos of the night sky, and constructing a mural of the solar system. The workshop will culminate in an outdoor picnic and stargazing adventure, where students will have the opportunity to implement the astrophotography techniques they've learned, as well as use the new Fusion telescope. The picnic will take place right around the annual Leonid meteor shower, so it should be a glittering night!
Schedule:
Monday, August 6th: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Tuesday, August 7th: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesday, August 8th: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Thursday, August 9th: 6 p.m. to . . . whenever!
Students of all ages are welcome--just contact Mary or Kate with questions or to sign up.
These programs were really rockin' this year! Music students will shortly release their annual CD, entitled "Are You Listening?" The Fusion Band rocked out every Sunday, and played live at the Christina Wolfe Benefit Concert in September. They'll also be playing at the first annual Fusion Art Exhibit, to be held June 2nd from 3-5 p.m. Our Art students created incredible pieces of artistic expression, and they are eager to display it at the exhibit.
| Substance Abuse & Recovery Division |
Season Hewitt, Fusion's Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor, has begun working with students who are experiencing substance abuse issues. We are both pleased and honored to have Season with us, and believe this program will assist families and students from all over our county who are struggling with alcohol- and drug-related issues. We are offering this program to students of all ages in an individual, after-school program format. Season will also teach our Drug Education course for credit beginning in our 2007-08 school year.

We know it seems awfully soon to start thinking about the 2007-08 school year, but as you know, our schedule books quickly. Now is the best time to secure your slot on our fall tutoring schedule. If you have a favorite teacher or need specific times/days for the fall, talk to your current teacher or contact Sarah Easton at the front desk. Either of them will be happy to pencil you in for the fall.
| Rancho Santa Fe Mental Health Fair |
Fusion participated in the Rancho Santa Fe Mental Health Fair on May 12th. We had a booth at the fair to educate the community about the educational alternatives available to students experiencing emotional difficulties. Held at the RSF Community Center, the fair featured representatives from both local and national mental health organizations, local psychiatrists and psychologists, renowned authors on the subject of mental health, advocacy program reps, educational consultants, school and specialty-program administrators, and many others. Speakers gave talks on topics including teen depression, ADHD coaching, eating disorder treatment, and understanding assessment reports. The event was so well attended, the organizers are considering making it an annual event.
A special thank you to Dunya Holland and Alice Norris for volunteering their time to answer questions about Fusion Learning Center and Fusion Academy at our booth.
| It's Always Hard to Say Goodbye |
Janelle Pieros and George Humphreys will both be leaving Fusion at the end of this school year. Janelle will be attending medical school, and George will be seeking his Master's degree. Both Janelle and George are veteran teachers here at Fusion, and they both will be greatly missed. Good luck to you both!
| Update on Christina Wolfe |
Although Fusion was devastated by the catastrophic accident suffered by our former Director of Fusion Academy, Christina Wolfe, we are astonished by the continued outpouring of love and support for her that flows through our halls. Thank you all for never giving up, and for believing that Christina would be OK. And she is! She progresses every day, and we hope to have her back at some point in the future, when she is ready. |

Graduation is Friday, June 1st. Graduation practice date will be determined the week of May 21st. All families of graduates are invited to the graduation ceremony, to be held at Morgan Run in Rancho Santa Fe. You should already have received your invitations, and graduates' caps and gowns will arrive by the week of May 21st.
If you have any questions about graduation, please contact Sarah Easton.
We probably don't need to remind you, but the last day of school at Fusion Academy for the 2006-07 school year is Wednesday, June 13th.
Our summer school program begins on Monday, June 18th, and all students joining us for the summer will receive their summer schedules by mail shortly.
The week of May 7th was IROC Week. Be on the lookout for your child's progress report, grades, self-evaluation, and updated goals. Transcripts will be sent at the end of this school year, and not in this IROC report. Please contact Michelle Gilman or Joseph Malki if you'd like to discuss your child's IROC and goals.
And, please discuss your child's self-evaluation with him or her. This is an excellent opportunity to bring up progress and how he or she feels about personal experiences at school. Keep in mind, though, that students' self-evaluations are just that: SELF-evaluations. Try not to be judgmental, as that can skew your child's unique and individual introspection.
| Full-Time Fall Scheduling Coming Up |
All full-time students' parents are required to make an appointment with Joseph Malki and Michelle Gilman for the week of June 25th-July 2nd.
During this very important meeting, we will discuss the fall 2007 semester, and what classes your child needs to satisfy graduation requirements. You will also select fall classes for your child at this time. Please schedule your appointment ASAP by contacting Sarah Easton at the front desk.
| A Fusion of Art, Music, and Poetry |
A creative explosion is happening on Saturday, June 2nd, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Fusion Academy's first Annual Showcase of the Arts!
The "Are You Listening?" showcase will feature student art pieces, musical works, and poetry. The centerpiece of the extravaganza will be the Text Art exhibit, comprised of both student and faculty work and prompted by the question, "What would you like to say to the Universe?" Many thanks to Mary Piazza Easton, Art Program Director, for initiating this event and your endless dedication to promoting the arts!
The poetry/rap slam portion of the event, guided by teacher Bailee Chandler, will be a live reading of short, original pieces by nine students from 8th-12th grade. These works represent what the students feel best illustrates who they are and what they want the world to know about them.
Last, but certainly not least, Fusion Band will celebrate the release of its annual CD at the exhibit. A diverse group of student musicians worked hard with Music Program Director Nicholas Angelo and music teacher Bobby Neal the entire school year to create it. Students from the Digital Graphics and Art classes collaborated to design the visual portions of the CD. You can show your support of our incredible students and their talents by purchasing a copy of the CD at the exhibit for just $5.
The Fusion Family Friday Fun Day (parents are invited!) will be Friday, June 8th. A softball game is the activity, and teams will consist of students, parents, and faculty. The event is being held in Cardiff, on Lake Drive at the baseball fields. Meet at Fusion at 9:30 a.m., and the game will start promptly at 10 o' clock.Teams will be selected at the field on game day.
We need a good turnout--at least 18 players--to make this work, so please plan to participate! For more info or to sign up, please call or email Nicholas Angelo right away.
If you need a lift from Fusion to the game, please let Nicholas know so he can reserve a seat for you in the Fusion van.
Also, please bring a mitt if you have one, as Fusion only has nine (one left-handed).
| Kate Takes the Reins from Janelle |
Kate Brutlag will tackle the positions of Foreign Language department head AND Test Preparation department head. She takes over these responsibilities from Janelle Pieros, who is leaving us at the end of the school year to go to med school.
About her new position, Kate says:
"As a lover of foreign languages and a compulsive standardized test-taker, I hope to bring new insight and experience to the Foreign Language and Test Preparation departments at Fusion. In the foreign languages area, I plan to continue Janelle's excellent work by increasing the number of languages taught at Fusion, and by showcasing the cultural studies of our students through a yearly multicultural event.
Also, as the new Test Prep department head, I hope to bring my prior experience as an SAT, CAT, and MCAT tutor to our students. I also plan to draw on my personal experience, having taken eight standardized tests between high school and college! My goals include improving Fusion's tracking of student scores and building up the ACT side of our program.
I welcome communication from both parents and students, and look forward to working with you all!"
At last, thanks to teacher Erik Hinojosa, Fusion is offering American Sign Language (ASL) for credit, beginning this summer. ASL1 is being offered first, to be followed by ASL2 in the fall. Erik says about this course:
"I'm very excited to bring ASL to Fusion Academy this year, which will launch during the summer program. ASL isn't just a collection of hand movements and gestures, but rather a complex language with a rich culture. While attending UCSD, I was fortunate to room with a deaf student. This experience allowed me to witness the deaf culture firsthand, and learn ASL from a 'native speaker.' It always felt like I was studying abroad without having to go anywhere! I furthered my interest in ASL by taking courses in it at UCSD and, as you can imagine, my roommate with a great help. I look forward to teaching this course to our students, and sharing its amazing culture with our Fusion community."
Fusion's first outdoor astronomy lab was a great success! With our new eight-inch telescope, wide-angle binoculars, and star wheels constructed by student Graham Bishop in hand, we headed out to Lake Hodges under darkened skies on May 8th.
Students delighted in sightings of Venus, Saturn, and some late spring constellations. Though haze obscured other planned sights (including the Orion nebula and the binary star system Alberio), the next outdoor astronomy lab should be even more exciting, as the Milky Way and summer triangle rise higher in the skies over the course of the summer.
Also, if you have access to any dark, flat areas with unobstructed horizons, or have any questions regarding the astronomy labs themselves, please email Astronomy course instructor Kate Brutlag.
We hosted WASC again in late March, and we believe we came through with flying colors! We haven't received our official letter of notification yet, but we are confident that Fusion shined like a star.
| Fusion Parents Are the BEST! |
Many thanks go out to Fusion moms Julia Durkin and Joanne Wornham for leading our Parent Advisory Group and for organizing great parent events!
In particular, thank you very much for Teacher Appreciation Day and the excellent turnout for the WASC parent meeting!
We are honored to have volunteer Parent Coordinators who are so incredibly dedicated, and many thanks to ALL Fusion parents who participated in the events this past year.
Fusion parents rock!
Are there any parents in the biotech field who might be able to help us acquire more lab equipment and materials to enhance our science lab? If you have anything to donate, or can assist us in obtaining things we need, please contact Brian Peterson, Science Department head. Thank you!
Erin Tonkon is student of the month! Erin elected to write her own entry into this issue of the newsletter, instead of us writing about her:
"Fusion has given me the opportunity to pursue my passion for music while continuing with a rigorous academic course load. The teachers and students here provide overwheming support on my path to success, and the progress I have made in terms of self-acceptance, personal well-being, and finding the courage to strive for only the best has truly skyrocketed in the months I have been a part of the Fusion family.
I wake up in the morning and not only look forward to my day of school, but also know I am in an environment that will aid me in making my dreams come true. That's a remarkable feeling that I'm so grateful for." -- Erin Tonkon
What an eloquent and thoughtful message to share, Erin. Thank you so much!
As a new feature of our newsletter, we're introducing a Teacher Corner section, where our unique faculty can share the experiences and inspiration they draw from being a part of the Fusion family.
This issue, Krystle Forseth, Math Department head, comments on her teaching experiences at Fusion:
"As a college student, I was faced with the common question of what I should do with my life. Like almost everyone else, I wanted to make a difference. As I observed numerous classroom ettings during my undergraduate career, I often felt that something was missing. It was clear to me that not every student is able to learn in the same way, and the classes that I observed had limited resources to accommodate the needs of these students. After graduation, I set out to become a private tutor instead.
Little did I know, but that same one-on-one logic used during tutoring could be applied to teaching course material as well. Fusion opened new doors for me, and gave me hope for the education system.
Each day, I am required to look at ideas from every different angle. The sense of openness and compassion here is unlike any other school I've seen. I am very honored to be a part of this unique and innovative learning environment. Thanks, Fusion!"
Thank YOU, Krystle! You are an incredible teacher and important part of our Fusion family!

Student John Wornham says about Fusion and his future:
"Fusion has definitely changed my life in a lot of ways . . . it's taught me how to cope with plenty of different things like fears and helped me learn how to deal with other people's actions. Fusion has made it much easier for me to understand so many more things, both in learning and in life.

| June 2007 |

Next year, I'll be going to Torrey Pines High School to play football, but I'll still be coming back to Fusion every day for Homework Cafe, and two days a week for tutoring. I'm really excited that I won't really be leaving Fusion entirely." |

Dear
Fusion families,
Welcome to the first edition of the 2007-2008 Fusion newsletter! We hope that your summer was relaxing, and that the arrival of the new school year has found you in good health and great spirits.
We would like to say hello to all our returning families, and send a huge welcome to our newly joined families.
Over this past summer, we have been busy gearing up for this new school year, and we are quite proud of what we have to offer the community.
This newsletter is chock-full of up-to-the-minute information we think you'll find useful, and we hope you'll take a moment to read through it all.
As we swiftly head straight into the fall months, we are optimistic in our mission, and even more determined to change the world, one child at a time.
My very warm regards,

Michelle Rose Gilman

| Incredible New Teachers Join Our Team |
We continue to attract and hire the most creative, passionate, and educated teachers in our industry. Please give a hearty hello to these new members of our faculty!
Katrina Glynn, a native of New York State, joins us as Homework Café teacher. She holds a Bachelor's in Sociology with a minor in Anthropology, as well as a Master's in Elementary Education. Katrina has worked as the Education Coordinator for the San Diego Historical Society since 2005.
Peter Mikulecky has a PhD in Biological Chemistry. He also earned a BS (magna cum laude) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, as well as Departmental Honors in Chemistry. Before arriving at Fusion, Peter held positions as Research Technician and Research Associate at The Scripps Research Institute, Indiana University, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He also served on active duty in the United States Army.
Blair Lyman has a BA in International Studies/Anthropology from UCSD. Prior to Fusion, she was Facilitator at UC Recreation; Campaign Coordinator for Amnesty International in Santiago, Chile; and interned at the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies.
Beth Nakae is from Northern California, and has both a BS in Human Biology as well as a Master's in Biology to her credit. Her professional background includes serving as a Graduate Biology Teaching Assistant at UCSD, a researcher in UCSD's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology departments, and a Patient Assistance Volunteer at the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic.
Cody Pileski holds a BA in English from the University of Wisconsin and a BS in Education from Kennesaw State University. He's currently working on his Master's degree in Educational & Informational Technologies at National University. Cody has public school experience, having been a teacher in the Orlando, FL, school system, as well as running his own nonprofit educational consulting firm.
Michael Salvatore is finishing his BS in Bioengineering with a minor in Psychology at UCSD. Prior to Fusion, he was a Research Assistant at The Burnham Institute, where he conducted molecular biology experiments.
Samantha Serpa comes to us from Wales, and holds a BS with Honors in Marine Biology from the University of Wales-Swansea. Currently, Samantha is working on her Master's in Marine Science at USD. She also has a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Wales, and was a Math and Science teacher at Swansea College.
Jolisa Turner holds a BA in Literary Studies with a minor in Education from the University of Texas-Dallas. She was a Special Ed teacher for the Garland Independent School District in Rowlett, TX, as well as a tutor for two private companies for several years before deciding to head to the West Coast.
Terry Wasley is our other new Homework Café teacher, and he holds a BS in Finance from the University of Maryland. Currently, Terry is working on his Master's in Education and his teaching credential at National University. Before joining Fusion, Terry worked as a Substitute Teacher for the Carlsbad Unified School District.
Wow! What a list! We are truly lucky to be able to say these dedicated and talented teachers are now part of the Fusion family!
Matt Russell has departed Fusion for the next chapter in his life. He was accepted to medical school on the East Coast, and is currently studying diligently. He hopes to return to San Diego at some point in the future. We miss you, Matt!
Jason Saltmarsh has also headed east, returning to his hometown of Boston to be nearer his family. Good luck, Jason!
Jeremiah Couch and Bailee Chandler have both returned to school to finish their respective Master's degrees, and we wish them both the best.
Fusion is always offering our Mock SAT and newly developed Mock ACT tests. The mock tests are a great way to gain familiarity with the actual tests, receive written feedback, and know if you need some additional assistance with preparation.
This year, in addition to the SAT and ACT, Fusion is offering the Mock SAT Subject Tests. When enrolling, please be sure you specify which subject test you are planning to take. If you're taking a foreign language SAT subject test, please bring your own headphones.
Fusion Mock SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and ACT dates are September 22nd, October 20th, November 17th, January 12th, February 16th, April 20th, and May 31st.
If you're taking the real SAT or ACT, be on the lookout for your "test tube." Fusion celebrates our test-prep kids! Good luck!
Is your student finishing a class through BYU Independent Studies? If so, then he or she will need to take their final exam with a certified proctor. BYU test proctoring is available at Fusion, so why not have your child take the exam in an environment in which he or she is comfortable? Check out our instructions online for ordering the test through BYU, and if you have questions, please call the Front Desk.

| Substance Abuse & Recovery Division |
Fusion launched the Adolescent Recovery Program over the summer, and it's already been featured in newspaper articles in both the Del Mar Times and Solana Beach Sun.
This outpatient substance-abuse program is now available to all adolescents in our entire community. The program is headed by Season Hewitt, who has seven years' experience as a counselor for Scripps McDonald Center/Adolescent Intensive Outpatient program.
Thanks, Season, for helping us bring this much-needed service to the San Diego community.

Fusion Academy News
September/October 2007
Fusion Academy students were a busy group this summer as they took those months to get ahead or make up some courses. Not only were they hard at work academically, they took some time out to have a little fun, too.
Science students jumped on the opportunity to visit the Bodies Exhibit at UTC, and what an amazing field trip that was! Thank you, Brian Peterson, for coordinating this fascinating event!
Many thanks go out to Judith Rothrock, mother of student Curtis Scholz, for giving Fusion Academy 20 tickets to the September 18th Padres game. We all had a blast! Go Padres!
| Fusion Band Rockin' Harder Than Ever |
Fusion Band is back in action, and what a group of musical talent we have this year! There are currently seven students in the band, and we're not stopping there. If you want to be a part of Fusion Band, contact Nicholas Angelo.
The band rehearses on Sundays in Cardiff, and this year, as in years past, they'll be performing gigs at various locations in the community. Keep your ears open for more info on where you can catch these budding stars playing live.
