The Mentoring Approach to Learningsm: A Fusion Learning Center Exclusive

Over 17 years ago, Fusion Learning Center’s founder, Michelle Rose Gilman, recognized that existing programs to assist children outside of regular school just weren’t getting the job done. Too many kids were being left behind or falling through the cracks. She was determined to make a change in the system.

In 1989, Michelle created the Mentoring Approach to Learningsm, a program designed to really reach students. She knew that unless a real relationship was formed between the tutor and the student, deep learning could not take place. The Mentoring Approachsm was created–and it worked! The premise behind the Mentoring Approachsm is the idea that all children need adults outside their families they can count on. Many times, when kids find it hard to talk with their parents, they’ll share their feelings with another significant adult in their lives.

Mentors are not replacements for parents–nor are they meant to be. Instead, mentors give your child a supportive, impartial outlet to discuss whatever’s on his or her mind–whether it’s school, peer pressure, or any of the number of other things children face every day in our world. So much more than ordinary tutors, our Educational Therapists and Educational Mentors are fully trained to create a healthy, meaningful, one-on-one relationship with your child. We help our kids grow as people and develop new skills and attitudes, not only about school, but also about life. Fusion Learning Center’s Educational Therapists and Mentors fulfill the following roles:

  • Coach: Our mentors work with your child on an individual basis to show them how to best perform a task or activity.
  • Facilitator: Our mentors seek out opportunities to expose your child to new, beneficial skills.
  • Counselor: Our mentors assist your child in exploring the pros and cons of potential decisions.
  • Networker: Our mentors refer your child to other professionals when the child’s needs exceed the mentor’s scope of expertise.
  • Coordinator: Our mentors pull together the community resources your child needs.

Give your child a chance to be heard, a feeling of respect, and a sense of hope: Effective mentoring creates a ripple effect of benefits that touches both your child and the mentor for life.

"Thank you for your help, assistance, and friendship during a particularly stressful time in my life. I experienced you as being unconditional yet firm in your approach. I appreciated every way in which you facilitated a beginning sense of structure and organization for me. I want to let you know that you did play a major role in my scholastic development. Thank you for providing a platform from which I could yell ‘jump!’ and make it through to the other side."

–Jeffrey, doctor and former student age 33
